Concentrations

  • Physics Department of Physics and Photon Science

    The physics concentration offers GIST undergraduate students a solid background in the fundamentals of physics required for their future research not only in physics but also related application areas such as electrical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, optical technology, and biophysics. The curriculum focuses on providing students a deep conceptual understanding of fundamental physics including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and statistical physics. Based on the core physics courses, numerous courses are added for the application of the physical concepts in related science and engineering disciplines. A few laboratory courses are prepared to deepen the understanding of nature using physical concepts. We expect the graduates from the applied physics track have the capability of applying physical concepts in multidisciplinary research fields.
  • Chemistry Department of Chemistry

    The Chemistry concentration delivers basic courses in chemistry which are required for research in chemistry as well as in other related areas such as materials science, environmental chemistry, and biochemistry. The courses cover general areas such as physical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, and analytical chemistry, providing basic knowledge on structure of matter (atomic structure, chemical bonding, molecular structure, and crystal structure), states of matter (gases, liquids, solids, and solutions), and chemical reactions (stoichiometry, equilibrium, thermodynamics, and kinetics). Specialized areas such as materials chemistry and environmental chemistry are also covered. The courses offered involve the combined use of different techniques such as theory, mechanistic analysis, computation, organic synthesis, and a variety of instrument-based analyses.
  • Life Science School of Life Sciences

    The biology concentration is designed to provide GIST undergraduates with understanding of fundamental and current knowledge in a variety of life science fields. The Concentration offers an array of courses to undergraduates, ranging from introductory courses to advanced and specialized courses. The three required courses provide basic knowledge and understanding on the nature of a variety of biological systems. In addition, two laboratory courses deliver theories and practices of recent techniques required for solving many aspects of the mysteries associated with life. Since the interests of the students vary, the Concentration provides flexibility once the required courses have been completed. Students may choose to obtain more advanced, in-depth training in the area of interests by taking graduate-level courses and conducting research in the related laboratory through the individual research. We expect our graduates to have the knowledge and experience for preparing their future careers in life sciences and related profession.
  • Electrical Engineering and Computer Science School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

    The educational objective of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) concentration is thus to encourage students to develop an in-depth and broad scientific knowledge base, rigorous analytical skill sets, and creative design methodologies, and then allow them to apply these concepts to solve engineering problems that arise in EECS and other related fields. With this capability, our graduates can seek success in industrial carriers or choose to move on to advanced studies, which could lead to successful careers in academia.
  • Mechanical Engineering School of Mechanical Engineering

    Mechanical engineering has provided the foundational technology for the explosive growth following the industrial revolution, which led to the realization of our modern society. Also mechanical engineering has been the academic field of applied physics for the realization of products which provide safety, convenience and entertainment to mankind in various fields: automobiles, aircraft, robots, ships, high-speed trains, ultraprecision machinery, home appliances, input/output devices, medical appliances, MEMS, micro-sensors, biosensors, physical exercise instruments, physical therapy equipment, agricultural machinery, textile machinery, solar power generator, wind turbines, fuel cells, spacecraft, and more. Mechanical engineering is a field which has contributed greatly to making real the possibility of modern facilities, equipment, devices, machines, and new materials. It is a unique field which sits at the junction of machinery, electronics, shipbuilding, aviation, architecture, chemical engineering, medical science, life science, culture, art, humanities and social science, and will play this unique role in future human development.
  • Materials Science and Engineering School of Materials Science and Engineering

    The GIST college materials science and engineering concentration (MSE concentration) offers the GIST undergraduate students the curriculum and courses related to the fundamentals and applications of various materials science and engineering. Students will gain insights and knowledge into development of new materials, design of material processing, and application to devices, which play pivotal roles in the present and future industry and human society. The GIST college MSE concentration provides essential and differentiated courses and studies for multidisciplinary material researches such as semiconductor materials, nano-electronic materials, organic materials, energy materials, and biomedical materials. It is expected that the students from the GIST MSE concentration contribute to the innovation and creation of the next generation materials and its devices for satisfying the needs of industry, nation, and mankind.
  • Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering

    An overheated earth, polluted environment, and the need for sustainable energy and water resources are the great task for mankind now. The earth and environmental engineering track is designed to offer a curriculum ranging from the fundamental to the specialized knowledge to find the way to restore the polluted environment and to understand the climate change. This curriculum includes not only general sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Sciences; but also applied sciences: Thermodynamics, Geophysics, Aerodynamics, Engineering Mathematics, Transport Phenomena, Unit Operations, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Water Chemistry, Soil Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Biochemistry, and Microbiology. The overall goal of the earth and environmental engineering track is to cultivate experts who have a strong grasp of understanding complex and compound phenomena in diverse environmental viewpoints, and who have a strong problem-solving capability with the in-depth understanding of earth sciences and environmental engineering.
