Welcome to the program
of the EECS Concentration
at GIST College.
Welcome to the program of the EECS Concentration at GIST College. I couldn't be more delighted as the Program Director to greet you to GIST College.
GIST College was established in the year 2010, and the EECS Concentration was shaped in the following year. I was one of the members honored to be part of the team who laid the foundation of the concentration. GIST is currently a world renowned research orented university. In the QS World University Rankings 2014, for example, GIST was ranked 4th in the world in the citations per-faculty category. Other evidences of excellency can be easily found in different categories as well. These results were made in a relatively short period, only 20 years since the foundation stones of GIST, then a graduate school only university, was placed in 1993. We are currently in the phase of making another big move-the creation of undergraduate programs. Despite its short history, we have accomplished a lot so far. GIST college students are known to be elite, coming from all across Korea and from abroad. More than half of the students are the nation's top Science School graduates while others are top 5% selects from regular high schools.
Our undergraduate education philosophy is somewhat different with that of the graduate division. We aim to emphasize balanced education. Shortly put, we set our sights on bringing up future leaders with strong bodies and balanced minds. We want the students to be healthy and physically fit. In Korea, there is an old saying "healthy minds are found in physically fit bodies." Soccer, basketball, swimming, and baseball are some of the sport credits GIST College students are required to earn for graduation. GIST is a science and engineering school and thus students are bound to take many science and engineering courses. But we believe future innovations in science and engineering require not only knowledge and skillsets in high tech stuffs but also with deeper understanding in the humanities. Therefore, we work towards balancing our programs with the liberal arts such as history, music, religion and literature.
EECS is the acronym for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. EECS programs are wide spread among top universities across the globe, especially those in the leading countries such as the United States of America and European nations. Some programs are more than a 100 years old. These programs are known to be successful and as such, they attract top students, with the distinctive tradition of offering very technically solid courses not only asking students to develop designing skills of practical importance but also rigorous analytical skills of scholarly nature. Funded by government GIST College is an exceptional institution that must compete with these other programs of the top schools worldwide, such as those of Caltech, Berkeley, MIT, Stanford, University of Michigan, UIUC, EPFL, Cambridge, Oxford, as well as those of KAIST and Seoul National University at home. Our graduates should be able to contend equally with the graduates from these top schools. This is a big challenge for us with the newborn EECS program at GIST.
We are prepared to take this challenge on. The most significant asset for our success to meet this challenge is the distinguished and accomplished faculty members. Our faculty understands the importance of undergraduate education and design courses accordingly. Take the time to look around our website and you will find how excellent their credentials are. Theyve got their PhDs
from prestigious universities and are internationally renowned scholars in their respective field of research. I proudly assure you of the quality education you will receive through our programs. The other news I am delighted to announce is a remarkable set of opportunities GIST offers. There are many privileges you can enjoy as a student here which include government scholarships, military service waivers, abroad summer internships and exchange student programs gratis, and state of-the-art school facilities. You can find out more about us at our GIST College websites. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to contact our staff for more information.
